Lasik eye surgery, (LASIK) and other refractive surgeries provide an alternative to glasses or contact lenses for some patients. However, Lasik surgery is not for everyone and there are risks. Dr. Mertins provides unbiased information for her patients who are considering LASIK or LASEK surgery, and will help you determine if you are a good candidate for one of these refractive surgeries. Dr. Mertins served as the Director of Refractive Surgery for a local surgeon and has even co-authored a chapter in a textbook used to train LASIK surgeons. Though she is intimately familiar with LASIK and LASEK, she does not perform surgery and has no financial incentive to encourage her patients to have LASIK or LASEK. If Dr. Mertins determines that you are a good candidate for LASIK or LASEK, and you decide to accept the risks associated with surgery, Dr. Mertins will coordinate with a local or regional surgeon, and will provide both pre-operative care and post-operative care to you. Dr. Mertins has worked with thousands of patients before and after their vision correction surgeries, and this wealth of experience allows her to provide accurate, unbiased information about refractive eye surgeries such as Lasik so that her patients can make informed decisions and obtain the best outcomes possible should they elect surgery. Due to potential for complications of LASIK surgery, Dr. Mertins typically does not recommend LASIK for any of her patients.
